macOS

macOS gets the full workbench too. The Mac owns the traffic lights, the menu bar, and the system sidebar material. We own the sheet.

Web counterpart

The web workbench. Same board, same sheet, same inspector.

Traffic lights left. Source list. The sheet is ours.

What carries

  • The inverted L, the floating sheet, and the resizable inspector.
  • Dense rows, hover, and keyboard paths.

Plus everything on the shared list.

What the host owns

  • Traffic lights on the top left.
  • The menu bar: app, File, Edit, View, Window, Help.
  • SF Pro on chrome. System sidebar material.
  • Full screen, Stage Manager, and window tiling.

Rules

  • Every command lives in the menu bar. If ⌘K can do it, a menu item can do it, with the shortcut shown. The menu bar is how Mac people find features.
  • Settings on ⌘,. Settings opens its own window. It is not a route inside the board.
  • Traffic lights stay where they are. Leave room on the top left of the sidebar. Do not draw our own, recolor them, or hide them.

We refuse

  • Windows caption buttons on a Mac.
  • A hamburger menu in place of the menu bar.
