Surface
Surface's hardware lesson for Thorbis is a stated hinge range, a display ratio tied to the work, a named metal that is allowed to change, a fabric cover with a care method, a pen that has a charging home, a service path before a replaceable part, a box that lists its contents, and a line name that stays while generation, size, and audience move. These observations inform proposals, not approved Thorbis rules.
Status: research. Thorbis specimen verification: unperformed.
The kickstand prints a range, and the range is per generation
The 18 June 2012 Surface release describes a built-in kickstand that is there when needed and disappears when not in use. It does not publish a degree range. The 22-degree figure in that release is the chassis edge, the angle of the PC at rest, not the hinge. Panos Panay's 20 May 2014 note states a friction hinge on Surface Pro 3 from zero to 150 degrees. The 23 May 2017 Surface Pro note says the hinge reclines almost flat to 165 degrees so people can write and draw, and the spec table calls it a full-friction multi-position hinge to 165 degrees. The October 2019 Surface Pro 7 fact sheet and the 2024 Surface Pro 11th Edition fact sheet both repeat a kickstand to 165 degrees. Print the stated range for that generation, and the posture the end of the range is for.

The display ratio is a work decision
The 2012 release gives Surface a 16:9 screen, called the industry standard for HD. Panay's 20 May 2014 note says Surface Pro 3 moved to 3:2 because the metaphor was a notebook, a magazine, a piece of paper, on a 12-inch ClearType screen at 2160 by 1440, meant to feel familiar in portrait and in landscape. The 2017 spec table prints 12.3 inches at 2736 by 1824, aspect ratio 3:2. The 11th Edition fact sheet prints a 13-inch display at 2880 by 1920, aspect ratio 3:2. The 19 May 2026 Surface for Business note says the 3:2 ratio is a productivity choice, not an aesthetic one: vertical space so two documents can sit side by side. Print the ratio and the work the extra height is for.

Name the metal, and change the spec when the metal changes
The 2012 release names the casing process VaporMg: magnesium molded and particle-deposited, parts as thin as 0.65 mm, a finish it compares to a luxury watch. That coined word is Microsoft's. The May 2017 spec and the Surface Pro 7 fact sheet both say magnesium body. The 11th Edition fact sheet says the casing is anodized aluminum, and its enclosure note says the bucket and the kickstand use 100 percent recycled aluminum alloy, with 100 percent recycled rare earth metals in the magnets, accounted under UL 2809-2. The recycled share is a materials figure with a method. It is not a strength grade. Say the metal and the process in plain words. When the metal changes, change the spec. Do not let a coined process name stand in for the metal.

Read the broad enclosure claim beside its footnote
The June 16, 2026 Devices Blog body describes Surface Pro 13-inch and Surface Laptop 13.8-inch and 15-inch as "made with a durable 100% recycled aluminum enclosure". Footnote 8 narrows that sentence: the Pro enclosure includes the bucket and kickstand and has 86 percent recycled content, with 100 percent recycled aluminum alloy in the bucket and 100 percent recycled rare earth metals in the magnets. The Laptop enclosure includes the A Cover and C Bucket and has 64 percent recycled content, with 100 percent recycled aluminum alloy in those two parts and 100 percent recycled rare earth metals in the magnets. Validation uses UL ECVP 2809-2, Second Edition, dated June 2024. These are part-specific and enclosure-specific denominators, not a claim that the whole device is 100 percent recycled. The adjective durable supplies no measured strength or grade. Keep the broad sentence and its footnote together when evaluating the claim.

The cover under the hands is a named fabric, with a care method
The May 2017 note describes a keyboard wrapped in coated Alcantara that is durable and stain resistant. The 11th Edition Flex Keyboard fact sheet lists Alcantara as the exterior material, in Black and Bright Sapphire, and says the keyboard has always visible secure storage and wireless charging for the Slim Pen. Its interface line is magnetic. Those color words are Microsoft's. The Signature Type Cover support page is a different cover: it connects with magnets, the care line is a slightly damp lint-free white cloth, a spill should be cleaned within 30 minutes, liquids are not applied directly to the Surface, and that cover does not fit Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 8, and later. Name the textile on the cover that ships, say how it feels, and print the care method for that cover. A fabric brand is not a finish name for the metal body.

The pen has a home that charges it, and the pen is sold separately
Microsoft's Slim Pen charge page says to place the pen with the button side facing out, that the LED lights while charging and turns off when full, and that the host has to be powered on because charging is wireless. The homes it lists are integrated storage and charging on the back of Surface Pro 12-inch, a bay under the Surface Laptop Studio keyboard, and the storage tray on the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard, the Surface Pro Keyboard with pen storage, and the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard. The 11th Edition fact sheet says those keyboards store and charge Surface Slim Pen, and that the pen is sold separately. The Pro 7 fact sheet says the Surface Pen and the Signature Type Cover are sold separately. Put a charging home on the product that takes a pen, show the charge state, and say on the page when the pen is a separate purchase.

A replaceable part needs a guide, a tool, and a person who may open it
iFixit scored the 2017 Surface Laptop 0 out of 10: opening it damaged the machine, and the processor, memory, and storage were soldered to the board. iFixit scored Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 8 out of 10 in their categories. On the Laptop 7, the bottom plate is magnetic, the manuals were up on launch day, screw symbols Microsoft calls Wayfinders mark each fastener, and the battery is held by eight screws. On the Pro 11, the drive sits under a magnetic cover beneath the kickstand, and the battery is held by screws with no glue. Microsoft Learn's SSD removal guide is written for qualified IT technicians. It lists compatible generations, including Surface Pro 11th Edition Snapdragon and Surface Laptop 7th Edition Snapdragon, and it warns of shock and fire. The 11th Edition fact sheet markets a removable Gen 4 solid-state drive and says repair uses clear visual icons and built-in access to repair instructions. Its footnote says a skilled technician follows the service guide, that Microsoft tools may be sold separately, and that damage during repair sits outside the warranty unless the law says otherwise. A separate footnote is an SSD Retention service, a fee if the drive is missing, not a promise that any owner can swap the drive. The 19 May 2026 note says the business machines use less glue and commonly available tools, and it repeats the same technician and warranty limits. Publish the guide, the tool, who may open the product, and what the warranty does before calling a part replaceable.

The box prints what is inside, and a fiber figure for that box
The May 2017 in-the-box line is the Surface Pro, the power supply, a quick start guide, and safety and warranty documents. The Pro 7 fact sheet lists the device, a 65 W power supply, a quick start guide, and safety documents, and says the keyboard, the pen, and the Arc Mouse are sold separately. The 11th Edition fact sheet lists the device, a quick start guide, and safety documents, and a 39 W power supply only with specific configurations in select markets. Keyboard and pen are sold separately. Its packaging line is paper-based, minimizing plastic, with 100 percent of virgin paper from FSC-certified sources. Microsoft's Surface sustainability page, updated 16 June 2026, prints model-specific fiber figures under IEEE 1680.1: at least 70 percent recycled content in wood-based fiber packaging for Surface Pro 13-inch, and 72 percent recycled content in 100 percent fiber-based packaging for the 13.8-inch and 15-inch laptops. Those figures belong to those boxes. Print the contents, say whether power and the keyboard are included, and print the fiber figure for that carton.

The line stays; generation, size, and audience are their own words
The line stayed Surface Pro while the generation label moved. The 23 May 2017 note says that year's device was simply called Surface Pro. The 2024 fact sheet titles it Surface Pro, 11th Edition, and names the processor on its own line. The 19 May 2026 note uses Surface Pro for Business and Surface Laptop for Business, with 13-inch, 13.8-inch, and 15-inch as size words, and names the Intel processor apart from the product. The 2017 spec lists Color: Platinum. The Pro 7 fact sheet lists Platinum and Matte Black. The 11th Edition fact sheet lists Sapphire, Dune, Platinum, and Black, and says colors vary by model and market. Those are Microsoft's color words. Keep the line. Put generation, size, and audience in their own words. Keep the processor out of the product name. Describe a finish by color, material, and process.

What Thorbis does not take
Do not adopt Platinum, Sapphire, Dune, Matte Black, or Bright Sapphire as Thorbis finish names. Do not adopt VaporMg as a coined finish, or Alcantara as a name for the metal body. Do not treat a loud fabric color as the brand accent. Do not assume the keyboard or the pen is in the box. Do not treat an 8 out of 10 score, or a technician service guide, as proof that any owner can open the product, or as an approved Thorbis rule. Do not treat a recycled-content percentage as proof of strength. Do not claim every Surface is magnesium, every keyboard is Alcantara, every hinge runs from zero to 150 degrees, or that 22 degrees is the kickstand. The flagship stays a dark body with white lettering. Thorbis electric blue is the only brand accent.
